Abstract
The study aims to evaluate the level of awareness of Senior High School (SHS) - Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) students of Kapayapaan Integrated School and their likelihood of taking Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship (BS ABME) as a college course. BS ABME was stated but not limited to University of the Philippines Los Baños' BS ABME. This also included similar courses that utilize the same program (BS AB or BS Agribusiness program) provided by Commission on Higher Education (CHED). Specifically, this study aims to: (1) present the profile of the Senior High School ABM Student respondents; (2) evaluate the students' awareness about BS Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship (BS ABME) and their reasons behind their awareness; (3) identify and evaluate the internal and external factors that will influence the likelihood of students in taking BS ABME as a college course and; (4) develop steps that can be taken from the suggestion of the students in promoting BS ABME.
Primary data was gathered through a survey questionnaire via Google forms and focused group discussion via Google Meet. The survey was answered by 108 Senior High School - Accountancy, Business and Management students in Kapayapaan Integrated School. The items in the questionnaire were adopted from various studies and with these, the survey used is valid and reliable enough to gather responses to further support the study. On the other hand, seven students have volunteered to share their insights in the focus group discussion.
Most of the respondents are females aged 17 years old and have an equal response between Grade 11 and Grade 12. Most of them belong to a family that has 3-5 members and has a monthly income of P11000 and below which is described as a poor income class by an estimated income bracket by Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) (Domingo, 2020).
The respondents were also asked about their awareness towards the BS Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship (BS ABME) program, such as program curriculum, colleges/ universities offering this program, and career path. Majority of the responses can be interpreted that the students are moderately aware of the BS ABME program. This implies that students can identify 3-4 career paths, 3-4 general subjects, 3-4 program outcomes and competencies, approximate the demand of the student in the nearest one and identify 5-6 aspects of the BS ABME program.
The researcher has also asked the students in terms of their likelihood in taking BS ABME from any schools in relation to personal factors, academic factors, environmental factors, school reputation and future opportunities. In each factor, the aspects that garnered the highest frequency response in influencing the likelihood of students in taking BS ABME as a college course were goals and passions in life, Senior High School strand, aptitude in the program, famous or successful person, program's faculty and job opportunities in this industry. Generally, it can be inferred that these factors may influence most of the students to take BS ABME or any related courses as a degree program in college.
Moreover, correlation was analyzed between the awareness level of SHS-SBM students, particularly in the statement of 'overall, I am aware of the BS Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship as a college degree program', and the specific factors influencing the likelihood of taking BS ABME program. In majority, the results show that there is a positive moderate correlation between personal factors, academic factors, school reputation and the awareness level of the students towards BS ABME, while environmental factors and future opportunities show a positive weak correlation. But both results can be interpreted that the awareness level and these factors have a direct relationship with each other, either weak or moderate, and if the students' awareness of BS ABME increases, it also increases the influence of the factors affecting the likelihood of taking BS ABME as a college course.
Lastly, the students are asked to give suggestions in promoting BS ABME as a college course to students especially in Accountancy, Business and Management students and these are their answers arranged from statement that garnered the highest votes to the one that got the lowest votes: seminar/webinars/orientations, more job orientations, high salary rate to the jobs related to this course, promotions/advertisements, more colleges/universities offer this course and activities organized by BS ABME affiliates.
With these results, the researcher still recommends having a broader scope regarding the schools if there will be someone who wishes to pursue the same topic for special problems. Also, even if the result is on the positive side, still there are students who are not aware and do not have the interest in taking BS ABME as their course in college. With this, the researcher wants to recommend ways to promote BS ABME as a college degree with its possible initiators. These recommendations are aligned to the recommendations stated in the study of Chavez (2018). The potential initiators are Department of Education, Department of Agriculture, Local Government Units (LGUs) Agribusiness Companies and Educators, Commission on Higher Education, Department of Science and Technology and Future researchers. Some of the suggested ways in promoting BS ABME were social media promotional materials, agricultural TV programs, posts and printouts indicating the colleges and universities offering BS Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship, allocation of funds to create more agricultural-related scholarship programs, providing financing and technical help to farmers, as well as developing national and local legislation, technology breakthroughs, and innovation and additional research to determine the other factors influencing students' decision to pursue BS Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship in college.
