Abstract
The study on the production and marketing of “kinulob na itik'' in Victoria, Laguna was conducted in Victoria, Laguna for its reputation for ducks and its specialty dish kinulob na itik. The study was near a lake, which was known to be very suitable for raising ducks. The study aimed to (1) present the profile and entrepreneurial competency of the processors of “kinulob na itik”; (2) describe the production and marketing practices of three “kinulob na itik” processors; (3) determine the problems faced by the “kinulob na itik” processors; and (4) formulate recommendations for the improvement of the performance of the “kinulob na itik” processors.
The three businesses considered in the study were all family-owned and were formed under sole proprietorship. The wife in the family was either the owner or the one greatly involved in the management of the business. The owners and managers have no formal education or training related to the operation of the business. However, results of the study showed that in terms of the entrepreneurial characteristics of the owners, it was observed that the owners were strong in almost all the competencies, particularly persuasion and networking and self-confidence.
The two businesses inside Victoria, Laguna were informal in nature. The businesses were mainly for the processing of kinulob na itik. They have no proper accounting and no formal record keeping of all the transactions. One of these two businesses was the oldest business among the three respondents. The other business was located along the highway road. It has adopted an accounting system and has an auditor.
The research used return on investment as a tool to measure the profitability of the businesses and all processors got a return of at least 27%. The profit and loss statement showed profit for all the business. It was observed that the bigger the operation of the kinulob na itik establishment, the bigger its profit.
The study looked at both the internal and external environment of the businesses. The external environment can be characterized as having minimal competition. It was found out that the most critical consideration was the supplier of the duck meat. There were two different approaches that were done to address the situation. Leo and Paz purchased its
duck meat at a higher price to get the priority in acquiring supply and Elly and Lillian’s on the other hand increased its number of suppliers reaching beyond Victoria, Laguna. The sole business that has yet to adapt to the issue of supply was Sixto’s Kinulob na Itik which is the smallest processor among the three. Sixto’s Kinulob na Itik was not formally registered as a business establishment. It was recommended for this establishment to officially register as a business to take advantage of the opportunities and assistance that the government provides to small businesses.
The kinulob na itik processors that were able to secure supply through their own distinct way confronted other challenges in their business. Leo and Paz Eatery was faced with a hindrance in its desire to expand and improve its establishment since it was in a leased land. The owner wanted to acquire its own land and place before making any move. It is recommended to canvas a potential land to buy and to apply for a loan to acquire the necessary funding for the acquisition and to be able to transfer. On the other hand, Elly and Lilian’s kinulob na itik was simply maintaining its operation with no plan to expand the business and to just wait for their children to inherit the business. The owner was already in his senior years and was already planning to pass on the business to his children. It is recommended that the owner formally register the business and to involve his children in its operation for proper transition.
