Abstract
The muscovado sugar industry has a positive outlook given by the shift in the consumer preferences towards natural and healthier food alternative products. It is also supported by its big potential to become a high value product both in the domestic and international market. However, the players of the muscovado sugar industry are also faced with numerous challenges such as threat of the growth of refined sugar industry, difficulties in meeting the market standards due to milling inefficiencies, absence of industry information, financial capital sourcing problems among others.
Magallanes Women's Club Multi-purpose Cooperative (MAWCO), a multi-purpose cooperative in Magallanes, Cavite, distributes their own muscovado sugar brand, Muscovado de Magallanes. The cooperative has been engaging in the muscovado sugar business since 2008 up to present. However, in the past few years, the cooperative has experienced poo Muscovado de Magallanes sales performance.
This study has been conducted to identify the most critical issue(s) faced by the cooperative with respect to its muscovado sugar business. Moreover, this study intended to present and describe the profile of MAWCO, analyze the micro and macroenvironment of the cooperative, evaluate the cooperative in terms of the five business functions, identify other strategic and design an action plan to improve the performance of their muscovado sugar business.
The primary data were gathered through personal interviews with the cooperative's members and key informants such as the chairperson of the board, general manager, secretary, marketing officer, bookkeeper, and treasurer. The other data were collection through the documents provided by the cooperative, published and unpublished special problem reports, news articles, and government records from concerned government agencies.
The results from the analyzed data, through the problem flow diagram, revealed that the most critical issues that contributes to the decreasing Muscovado de Magallanes sales were threat to stable and good quality supply and to good supplier relationship and low market reach outside Magallanes. These critical issues stemmed from the the lack of marketing efforts and multiple sourcing issues that the cooperative suffers. The analysis of the marketing aspect exhibited that the cooperative's only actual market are its members, LGU, and other private buyers. They also only have three market outlets and weak promotional strategies which greatly contribute to their low market outlets and weak promotional strategies which greatly contribute to their low market reach outside Magallanes. The analysis of the operation aspect reveled that the cooperative suffers from multiple sourcing issues such as inconsistent product quality, seasonal supply, and lack of control over supply price. Meanwhile, the analysis of the personnel aspect disclosed that members became inactive due to the pandemic and that some officers are not fulfilling their duties and responsibilities. And lastly, the analysis of the financial aspect disclose that he Muscovado de Magallanes product line experienced decreasing sales and decreasing contribution to the cooperative's total revenue which explains its poor financial performance.
The study recommended that the cooperative must implement an action plan to increase market reach and gain access to stable and good quality muscovado sugar supply. The activities involved are to create supplier scorecards, enter into supply agreements, establish a more organized production process, intensify marketing efforts, increase retail outlets and distribution channels outside Magallanes, study muscovado sugar milling plant is viable, and research and develop possible value addition activities.
