Abstract

The special problem report presented the dilemma of the Black Blade Coconut Philippines, Inc. (BBCPI), a desiccated coconut company based in the province of Quezon, Philippines. Since its establishment in 1946, the BBCPI has maintained its position as the fifth largest desiccated coconut producer in the country. Challenges in its operation threatened to meet its targets to maintain this position and bounce ahead of its competitors. The report aims to analyze the overall operations of the BCCPI; identify problem areas and recommend possible solutions to the identified problems. The methodology used in the report included data gathering through visits to the factory site and offices; examination of the company records, and the conduct of interviews with the production workers and firm managers to determine company performance and other relevant information. Coconut and desiccated coconut industry reports were researched from available materials in government offices. Resource people who were well-versed in the industry were also interviewed.

The study revealed that the BBCPI could sustain its top five rank among 21 desiccated coconut producers in the country because of its good track record, its outstanding financial performance, and its affiliation, being one of the top subsidiaries of American companies. Its close link to influential organizations and government institutions helped maintain its spot in the industry.

BBCPI could further expand its operations and take advantage of the opportunities in the desiccated coconut industry, primarily the favorable demand, supply and rice forecasts as well as the limited number of competitors in the industry. It could still get a bigger slick of the market by improving its production and marketing operations. A serious threat to its operations was the possibility of workers protests should it fail to give in to the demands of the workers' union.

The study recommended the following strategies that the company should pursue: (1) craft and implement a workers' development program toward developing a harmonious working environment between the management and the workers' union; (2) develop a productivity improvement program to address operational inefficiencies and improve productivity; and (3) create a networking team to expand and strengthen its presence in the industry through partner organizations.
