Being a crop that has so much potential, in March 2009, Bicol University College of Agriculture and Forestry (BUCAF) started a program entitled, “Enhancing the Demand for AFNR Graduates through Science and Technology”. The project was entitled “Bicol University-Led Support to IGPs and DATBED”, and the technology that was introduced is Asexual Pili Seedling Propagation Technology which gave way to the establishment of the nursery.
The Platarium Canarium Plant and Nursery Supplies has been operating for almost 10 years already but growth within the business is stagnant and so this study aimed to provide a strategic plan that would help the nursery improve its current business situation. Specifically, the study aimed to: present the profile of Plantarium Canarium Plant and Nursery Supplies; evaluate the business environment prevailing at a particular time of the case; evaluate the business in terms of the four business functions; generate and evaluate alternative solutions to the identified problem; identify the best solution using appropriate criteria; and design an implementation plan for the chosen solution.
Primary and secondary data were used to gather information. Interviews were conducted with the owner, Mrs. Josie Pante-Nares and her worker. Environment analysis was done based on secondary information provided by different online data sites operated by the government. Internal and External Factor Evaluation (IFE and EFE), Strength- Weaknesses-Opportunities-Treats (SWOT) analysis were also done.
The objectives, mission and vision of the nursery were presented and assessed. The four business functions namely, marketing, personnel, operations and finance, were also presented in the study.
The analysis of the four key functional areas of the business has been used in order to identify the major issues faced by Plantarium Canarium Plant and Nursery Supplies. Upon analyzing the problems, it was concluded that the strategic issue for the nursery is the significant decline of sales in the years 2016 to 2017. Although there are no major issues in each business functions, the researcher found out that the nursery’s operation has been stagnant. Focus should be on the improvements of the current production aspect in order to improve profitability and sustainability.
Based on the SWOT analysis, the owner should be more aggressive in making Plantarium Canarium Plant and Nursery Supplies a more sustainable nursery and a competitive one in the market. This can be broken down into three strategies: (1) The owner should exert more aggressive efforts in improving profitability by utilizing the resources that it has; (2) Plantarium Canarium Plant and Nursery Supplies should become aggressive in initiating promotional strategies in order to reach a wider market; and (3) Plantarium Canarium Plant and Nursery Supplies should take advantage of government support to discover a wider variety of products.
