Abstract

The industry of fancy chicken in the Philippines recently started gaining popularity because of the national and regional poultry shows conducted in the past few years and the moderate attractiveness of the industry. In addition to this trend are the founding of various organizations focusing on fancy chickens. Despite of the steady popularity growth, the industry is still relatively young and needed support not only from the breeders and enthusiasts, but also from the government and private institutions. The infancy of the industry also calls for an exploratory agribusiness overview about the industry.

The general objective of the research is to describe and analyze the current status, problems and prospects of fancy fowl industry in Bulacan. Specifically, the research intends to present the socio-demographic profile of the key players in the industry, discuss the overall status of the fancy chicken market, assess the existing gaps and challenges encountered by the industry players, analyze the potential and investment and developmental opportunities available, and most importantly, formulate recommendations to address the problems and to strengthen the fancy chicken industry.

A mixed method research analyses, both exploratory and descriptive designs, were used. Eighteen fancy chicken breeders and importer were interviewed face-to-face through a structured questionnaire to gather the necessary information for the research. Porter‟s Five Forces model, key factors of competitive success, and cost and benefit analysis, were used to process the information and gain insights to formulate recommendations for the industry.

All the breeders interviewed were male with age ranging from 18 to 47 years old, with majority being married. None of the breeders are formally registered as business to any government units, yet a great majority is part of fancy chicken associations.

Almost all of them engage in the industry mainly because of passion and not of its economic viability. For them, fancy chicken breeding is just their secondary source of income while they work as business owner, manager, programmer, administrative staff, etc. More than half of them are earning Php 10,000 – Php 20,000 every month from their main job.

Among their backyard and farms, Modern Game Bantam (MGB), Sebright, and Sikie are the most popular fancy chicken being carried and bred. The minimum number of chickens that the breeders are breeding is three while the maximum is more than 100. The average starting capital of the breeders is relatively low at Php 3,741, while monthly maintenance cost of and adult chicken is estimated at Php 68.17. Considering factors identified to be quantifiable and were obtained, while the average annual net income of the breeders, on the average earn an annual net income of the is Php 150,676.47. Fancy chickens can be sold from Php 1,000 to Php 16,000, which is highly dictated by the appearance of the breed.

The problems identified in the fancy chicken industry were the presence of pest and diseases, predators, lack of knowledge in breeding practices/management, difficulty in shipping, climate change, lack of government support, lack of record keeping, no standard pricing, no official standards and licensed judges, and unstable market. On the other hand, the prospects are importation, utilization of chicken manure, egg and meat production, backward integration, technological advancements, increasing popularity, and scalability of business.

Since the fancy chicken industry is an emerging and growing industry, recommendations were developed to strengthen the industry. The recommendations for the fancy chicken industry key players were also formulated to answer the problems and gaps and to utilize the prospects identified. For fancy chicken breeders, the recommendations are to improve the quality of the breeds, diversification, employ record keeping system, improve biosecurity and vaccination program, and farm registration. For the prospective breeders, invest in quality breeds, gain knowledge on breeding and poultry standards, formulate effective biosecurity and vaccination program, and keep records. While for the clubs and organizations, the recommendations are aggressive promotion of the industry, pricing regulations, publish own breed standards, standardization of pointing system and licensing of judges, and conduct trainings and seminars. For further studies, it is recommended to include more players in the industry and to quantify the demand. Lastly, the support units are recommended to promote the industry, conduct trainings and seminars, improve the procurement of shipping permits, and minimize the corruption.
