Abstract
The growth of the pollen tubes and self-incompatibility following pollination in Nussaenda flava L. was studied. Stigma and style of intact flowers were hand-pollinated and observed after 1, 2, 4, 6. 12, 24 and 48 hours using fluorescence microscopy techniques. The pollen tube growth commenced after 1 hour in the stigma and reached its longest length after 24 hours. The pollen tubes stopped growing at the base of the stigma, had abnormal morphology, and were incapable of continued growth with longer time. Pollen grains that were brushed in the style after excision of the stigma germinated only after 24 hours of pollination and they did not exceed the length of pollen tubes in the stigma. The pollen tubes wore also abnormal and were not capable of continued growth after 48 hours. Therefore, the self-incompatibility reaction in N. flava occurs after pollen germination and maximum inhibition happened in the style. Fruit setting did not occur in N. flaw, due to the failure of the pollen tube to reach the ovary due to its very slow mobility.
