Abstract
Microscopic studies of the spherical colonies of the N. commune showed that the blue-green envelope consisted only of long filaments of vegetative cells with hetarocysts in between and a white core composed only of short trichomes, ensheathed trichomes, detached haterocysts and crystals of various shapes and dimensions. These crystals were designated numerically from 1 to 7. The interaction of the size of the colony with the type and number crystal was found to be highly significant. Three types of crystal (#1, 2 and 3) decreased in number as the colony size increased while the two types (#5 and 6) increased with the size of the algal colony. There was no trend for the other two types (#2 and 7). It was also established that the nitrogen content of the white core of N. commune increased as the size of the colony increased. The nitrogen. content was also positively correlated to the crystal types 5, 6 and 7 but negatively correlated to crystal types 1, 2, 3 and 4. Thus this implied that the nitrogen content was positively correlated to the number of crystal types 5,6 and 7 and negatively correlated to the number of crystal types 1, 2, 3 and 4.
