Abstract

An avifaunal survey comparing species diversity, endemism and similarity of birds found in the four larger islands of the Batanes group was conducted in May-June 2007. Standard sampling was done in remnant patches of secondary forests representing lowland study sites in Batan, Sabtang. ltbayat and Ivojos islands. Birds were sampled using mist-nets. Birds observed outside mist-netting such as those merely sighted in the islands, and species ascertained through ethno-biological interviews of local people were recorded. 62 species of birds were recorded in the Batanes islands: 48 resident species and 14 migrants. Diversity was generally low for all islands, but it is interesting to note a number (11) of new records for the islands Sabtang and Itbayat, including the endemic and near-threatened species Otus elegans and the widespread Pidinoptis leclandcheri.
