Abstract
Morpho-anatomical study was done to confirm the identities of two locally available species of Equisetum and "potoptod", a dried herbal preparation sold as diuretic in Baguio City. Results showed that the two species were the imported E. hyemale and F ramossimum subsp. debt!, reported to be the only native species in the country. Features of "potoptod" were similar to E ramosissimum subsp. debile. Histochemistry and thin layer chromatography showed the presence of the diuretic constituents, saponins and flavonoids, in the plant samples. Each sample also showed a flavonoid profile different from that of E. arvense, the known medicinal species of Equiselum listed in the different pharmacopcias of the world. Tests made on the two sets of "potoptod" with different drying age indicated higher level of flavonoid content with drying. Alkaloids, which is not desired in the herbal preparation, was found to be present only in minute amounts in both species. E ramosissimum subsp. debile could be a local substitute for E. arvense as a diuretic herb.
