Abstract
A survey was conducted from July 2000 to March 2001 to study the mode of inheritance of autism in Filipinos in Region IV and the National Capital Region. Pedigree charts were constructed from the families of affected individuals. A sample of 269 families with individuals experiencing autism was studied. 'Twenty-eight family lines with affected individuals who has a relative experiencing the same disorder was observed. Autosomal dominance was observed in seven percent of the families and twenty-one percent have an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. Six percent has a sex-linked dominant mode of inheritance. wherein. the mother transmitted the disorder to her son and the father, to his daughter. As in all complex behavioral disorders, there's no clear evidence when looking at family pedigrees or family trees that suggests a single-gene may underlie this disorder, thus, the remaining sixty-six percent showed no definite pattern of inheritance. Forty-one Down Syndrome cases were observed in families of autists consisting of 2I males and 20 females. Analysis of results also showed the occurrence of mental retardation it the lineage of Families with autists. Thirty-seven mental retardation cases were obtained, 22 of which are male and I5 female.
