Abstract
Thirty six normal (MM and M ) and mutant (mmm) coconut samples in the age range of six to twelve months were assayed for their cyclic AMP contents using the ra dioimmunoassay technique. his technique involves the competition between sample cyclic AMP and tracer authentic 3 cyclic AMP for sites in a binding protein. The levels of cyclic AMP between normal and mutant endosperms were shown to differ marked per age group considered, attaining the greatest difference in the 8 to 9 month group (0.4 pmol/mg fresh weight vs. 4.(667 pmol/ mg fresh weight) where tie larger levels are found in normal coconuts. Likewise, it was found that with age, decreasing levels of cyclic AMP are detected regardless of whether it is normal or mutant cell type. No significant
differences in levels of cyclic AID were found between nor mal nuts from macapuno bearing trees (fm) and normal nuts taken from ordinary trees In every age group, the mutant endosperm showed characteristic lower levels of cyclic AMP. Both trends were discussed in relation to recent findings regarding the role of cyclic is in some animal and plant systems. Emphasis was placed on the part played by cyclic AMP in tumor induction as found in some plant systems. A correlation between peroxidase, auxin and cyclic Alit' levels was found and a mechanism based on evidences gathered from other tissues and cells was formula-ted. Even though such mechanisms seem to be attractive, further studies are definitely: needed to determine the true mechanism/s of genetic control of coconut tumor induction as i. macapuno.
