Abstract
Chromosome characteristics based on mitotic behavior, arm ratio, relative length, and types according to centromere position were determined in two Philippine native orchids, namely Dendrohium anosmum var dearei Lindl. and D. aphyllum (Roxburgh) Fisher. Normal mitotic stages were observed from the acetocarmine squash preparations of the root tip cells. Mitotic index was higher at D. aphyllum (30.47%) than D. anosmum var dearei (21.87%). The karyotypes revealed a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 38 in the two species. The average relative chromosome lengths were almost similar ranging from 0.035 to 0.081 in D. anosmum var dearei and 0.030 to 0.080 in D. aphyllum. Based on the arm ratio, all the chromosomes in the two Dendrobium species were metacentric.
