Abstract
The genetics of resistance in tomato (Lycopersicon esculemum L.) to Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV), transmitted by whitefly (Bemisia !abaci) were studied in two Florida tomato lines Fla 699 and Fla 456-4 in AVRDC, Taiwan. Resistance in Fla 699 originated from L,. pimpinellifolium accession P1211840 and L. chilense LA1938 while resistance in Fla 456-4 was derived from L. chilense LA2779 and tomato hybrid Tyking. Crosses between these two whitefly-transmitted-geminivirus (WTG) resistant lines with susceptible AVRDC fresh market tomato line, CLN 14663 were carried out and F1, F2 and F3 populations were produced. P, (CLN 14663), P2 (Ha 699), P3 (Fla 456-4), F,, F2 and F3 were inoculated with local strains of TYLCV by means of the vector whitefly, (Bemisia tabaci) for 35 days and transplanted to the field. Disease reactions were studied in all crosses. F, plants were all resistant. F2 plants segregated in a 15:1 ratio (resistant : susceptible). Reactions of F2 suggest that resistance derived from Fla 699 and Fla 456-4 followed a duplicate dominant epistasis. The genotypes of parental lines Fla 699 and Fla 456-4 are both AABB. The genotype of F, is AaBb. F., genotypes are AABB, AABb, AAbb, AaBB, AaBb, Aabb, aaBB, aaBb and aabb. Resistant genotypes are AABB, AABb, Aabb, AaBB, AaBb, Aabb, aaBB, aaBb while susceptible genotype is aabb.
