Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the factors affecting the inclination of junior high school students in selected schools in Tanauan, Batangas to pursue BS in Agribusiness Management (BS ABM) degree. Specifically, this study aimed to: (a) describe the socio demographic characteristics of junior high school students in schools in Tanauan, Batangas; (b) determine the factors affecting the inclination of junior high school students to pursue BS in Agribusiness Management; (c) analyze how the factors affect the inclination of junior high school student on pursuing BS in Agribusiness Management; (d) identify the reasons for preferring to pursue or not the BS in Agribusiness Management; and (e) recommend strategies to promote Agribusiness Management as a college course. Moreover, it was important to note that it involves study of behavior which might not be in line with other behavioral studies.
Primary data were obtained through a self –administered survey provided to 341 junior high school students in Tanauan. Batangas, specifically the Grade 9 and Grade 10 students. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used in determining the level of association of the inclination of the students to pursue BS in Agribusiness Management and the variables identified in the study namely: socio demographic characteristics, environment (physical and social), knowledge, agribusiness/agricultural exposure, level of interest, perception, and opportunity factors. Chi square test of independence- Cramer’s V was calculated in order to determine the level of association between ordinal and nominal variables while Spearman correlation was measured to identify the level of association between nominal and nominal variables.
According to the results obtained, students who reside in rural community and have a close proximity to farm or agricultural related area are less likely to take agricultural related courses. This is because the students who were residing in rural communities, which are mostly located in agricultural areas and uncivilized, tend to perceive and observe the current situation of farms that influence their perception on taking agribusiness management. Another possible reason is that students wanted to try new environment and moved away from rural setting. Furthermore, very few students who have a farmer and business man parents wanted to pursue BS in Agribusiness Management. This is because most of the farmers in the country perform subsistence farming. The students with farmer parents are not interested to pursue agricultural related courses because of their perception on the current situation of their family. Also, the farmer parents will not allow their child to experience tedious work which they have been associated in farming.
Based on the factors affecting the students’ inclination to pursue BS ABM, this research study recommends the following: creation of promotional campaigns (1), provisions of more extensive program to provide the students a better agribusiness/agricultural exposure such as trips to farms (2), additional seminars and training focusing on the livelihood activities in relation with agriculture in rural communities (3), information transfer to the general public regarding the entrepreneurial ideas on agriculture and the opportunities on the sector (4), creation of more scholarships on agricultural related degree programs (5), incorporation of agriculture related subjects in the elementary curriculum (6), and empowering farmers that can be an avenue to alter the negative perception of youth towards agriculture, in general (7). It is important to note that promoting agricultural courses such as BS in Agribusiness Management would require collective efforts from the youth, private institutions, agribusiness and agricultural sector, government, farmers and the society in general. These efforts on making a sustainable development on the agricultural sector will make the industry attractive and profitable.
