Abstract

Twenty-five marine crabs Portunus pelagicus sampled bimonthly from Bagong Pook, San Antonio, Cavite City were examined for the presence of epizoic barnacles. Three species were identified as Octolasmis angulata (Aurivillius, 1894), Octolasmis warwicki (J.E. Gray, 1825) and Trilasmin tridens (Aurivillius, 1894). 0. angulata occurred in large number on the gills, while O. warwicki and T. tridens were present on the carapace of the decapod host. Orientation of 0. angulata showed a positive response to water current bathing the gills and face the cur-rent within the branchial chamber, to facilitate filter-feeding activity. Population of 0. angulata showed fluctuations with time. Runs test indicated that those cirripeds on male hosts were not affected by periodicity, while those on female hosts were significantly affected by periodicity. Occurrence of O. warwicki and T. tridens on the carapace were not significantly affected by periodicity.
