Abstract

The use of hair morphology was tested in determining the rodent that can be found in an area of Mount Makiling. Hairs were coIlected using 50 ( 5"X 2.) PVC pipes or tubes in a 20m X 50m area in the forest. Adhesive was applied In the two openings of each tube to ,rai, Ire loose hairs of small mammals or rodents and baits were placed the tubes to attract the animals. Baiting and checking for disturbance of bait or presence of hairs were done as the weather during the time of study permitted. A total of four months were spent for gathering hairs. The hairs collected from the tubes were mounted on microscope slides and hair features or characters were determined based on the classifications by Brunner and Conran (1974). Out of the 14 individual hairs collected only 3 were identified as possible guard from rodents. This was done by comparing the hair features of the unknown hair with those of reference hairs taken from identified murid rodents from the UPLB Museum of Natural History. The possible identity of the source of the hairs may be species of Rattus, PhIoemys or Chrotomys. Although only few hairs were collected this method can be further tested to determine the best procedure for collecting hairs and to identify the exact species of rodents in the area.
