Abstract
Qualitative pollen analysis was carried out with two honey samples collected during this month of April, 1984 with the objectives of determining and comparing the nectar sources of the two localities, assessing the value of the different plant species as nectar and pollen sources, and establishing the quality of the honey _wimples. The pollen grains contained in each sample were identified with the aid of a collection of reference pollen slides or pollen herbarium. A pollen spectrum was prepared for each honey sample and the pollen content relation wan evaluated by calculating the Index of Similarity value. The pollen spectra obtained showed that the samples were relatively rich in pollen types. About twenty-three pollen typed were observed from the two samples; fifteen of which were identified, one could only be identified tentatively, and seven others remained unidentified. The honey sample from the Jan Lorenzo apiary was richer in pollen types than the honey sample taken from the San Miguel apiary. The number of pollen types, Including those unidentified, was eighteen in the San Lorenzo sample and thirteen in the San Miguel sample. Generally, however, the difference in the pollen style composition of the two samples was very slight as supported by the high value of the index of similarity (IS) obtained which was 91.48%.
The pollens of Mangifera indica, Cucumis sp., Leucaena Leucocophala, Nimona nudica, Psidium guajava, Cocos nucifera, and Muntingia calabura were common in both samples and these constituted the bulk of the pollens in the honey samples. The predominant pollen types in the San Lorenzo sample were Mangifera indica, cocos nucifera, and Psidium guajaba. The three predominant pollen types in the San Miguel sample were Mangifera indica, Psidium guajaba, and Muntingia calabura. The pollen spectra of the two honey samples showed that the honey and pollen sources in the two localities ranged from trees, vines, herbs, palm and some weeds.
