Abstract

Mushroom is considered by Filipino consumers as a vegetable. Even though mushroom culture is becoming prominent in the Philippines, its present cultivation in the country is limited despite being realized that mushrooms have the potential of being a common food for the people. As mushroom grower and mushroom processor, GMAWD Mushroom Growers should strategize on how it can sustain in the industry. Its goal is to promote mushroom industry and could produce oyster mushrooms enough for the municipality to live up to what it’s called for- “The Mushroom Capital of Cavite” in the long run.

This study aims to assess and analyze the performance of GMAWD Mushroom Growers and KKMK. Specifically, the research intends to: (1) Present the external macroenvironment and microenvironment relevant to the project; (2) Describe the project in terms of marketing, operations, human resource, and finance; (3)Explain the challenges or constraints experienced by the project; and (4) Provide recommendations towards the project’s sustainability.

For this study, a qualitative design, specifically the descriptive research design, was used to analyze and interpret the information obtained from the respondents. This type of research enabled the researcher to describe the profile of mushroom production and processing key players. This type of research is also suitable in finding the problems and issues in the organization, in identifying the actions the organizations implement, and in analyzing investment opportunities and identifying entry points in the organization.

The primary data were gathered through a visit to the office, to the farm, and to the place of the respondent for the processing section of the organization, where interviews were conducted to the representatives of the production side and the processing side, and to key informants, such as the municipal agriculturist, in GMA, Cavite. Meanwhile, the secondary data were gathered from existing records, newspaper, journals, articles, reports, official website of GMA, Cavite, and official website of GMA Water District (GMAWD). The researcher also gathered information from blogs and other websites that state information unstated in other journals or sources.

The gathered primary and secondary data were used to determine the status and problems in the oyster mushroom production in the area. These will be analyzed through qualitative and quantitative analyses.

For qualitative analysis, Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats of the GMAWD Mushroom Growers will be identified. For quantitative analysis, cost and return analysis will be used. This will enable the researcher to identify the profitability of the project.

Given the current situation of the General Mariano Alvarez Water District Mushroom Growers project, it is found that one of the root problems of the project is that the personnel has poor attitude towards it. Their performance on each function: Marketing, Operations, Human Resources, and Finance; is affected by this poor attitude. This attitude could be the effect of considering it as a project, which depicts a lack of sense of ownership. As a suggested solution, there should be a huge change in the organizational setup. The project should be made into a cooperative with Water District supporting it. In this case, there will be more sense of ownership for the business. For the new cooperative, vision and mission statements were formulated. These would serve as a guide to success for the cooperative. Without these, this might fail. Having a poor record-keeping about the financial performance of the project has a huge impact in its sustainability also. They would not be able to monitor the current situation of the project and to its surprise, would not be able to continue. So, in the cooperative, it would be suggested that a record keeper would be assigned. And since it is a government employees’ cooperative, it won’t be difficult to find employees for it. In the long term, production of own spawns would greatly lessen the expenses and would increase their profits.
