Abstract
The study was conducted to present the current status, major problems and prospects of Pili pulp oil industry in Irosin, Sorsogon.
The specific objectives of the study were to: 1) present the profile of the key players of industry; 2) assess current status of pili pulp oil industry in terms of macro-environment and micro management practices of the pili pulp oil industry; 3) identify opportunities, issues and gaps in the industry and; 4) recommend strategies for the development and sustainability of the industry.
The key players of this study were: producers (59), processors (manual-1; mechanized-15), farmer-trader-processor (1) and trader-consolidator (3). Respondents were obtained through convenience sampling due to transportation and geographic limitations (mountainous ecology). They came from 11 barangays of Irosin where majority of the key players were located. These barangays were the following; San Julian, Gulang-gulang, San Pedro, Mapaso, Balos, Sto, Domingo, San Juan, Tabon-tabon, Cogon, Balos and Carriedo.
Primary data were gathered through questionnaires and personal interviews. Secondary data came from Provincial Office Agriculture (PAO) in Sorsogon, Department Trade and Industry (DTI), Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and Department of Science and Technology (DOST). The status and problem analyses of the study were done through the aid of SWOT Analysis, key success factors and drivers of change.
Major problems encountered by the players in the industry were the following: 1) typhoon; 2) lack of post harvest technology; 3) high cost of equipment; 4) poor access to market information; 5) limited advertisement about the product; 6) lack of working capital; 7) collection of credit; 8) injuries in the workplace and; 9) decreasing number of harvester or “parakawit”.
On the other hand, prospects for the industry were determined, these are: 1) support from the government like loans and trainings; 2) increasing demand for naturally produced products and; 3) continuous research and development being conducted by several research institutions to further improve the quality and production of Pili pulp oil.
SWOT Analysis determined the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that the industry currently faced. The strengths were: 1) assured supply of Pili; 2) nutritive value and health benefits of Pili pulp oil; 3) pili trees are organic in nature and 4) simple steps in processing oil. Weaknesses seen were: 1) few processors and 2) lack of marketing information. Opportunities identified were: 1) ASEAN Integration; 2) high demand for organic products and 3) government support and assistance. And lastly, threats were: 1) typhoons frequently passing in the region annually and; 2) high cost of capital.
After analyzing all the information about the industry, recommendations were formulated namely: 1.) establishing an organization or cooperative for processors; 2) establishing a shared service facility in municipalities with high Pili production; 3) more trainings and seminars in all municipalities to encourage more processors; 4) to connect the processors to buyers with the help of support institutions; 5) market expansion; 6) product endorsement from experts and professional and; 7) disaster preparedness to lessen the loss if typhoon hits again.
Pili pulp oil industry in Irosin, Sorsogon is relatively small in size and still in infancy stage. However, it has bigger room for growth and development. With continuous research and development on the product and if given more support and attention by the national and provincial government, the industry can flourish, opening more investment opportunities to its current key players and attract more potential investors.
