Abstract
The floral biology and cytology of A. lanceolata Roxb, an ornamental shrub indigenous to the Philippines, was studied. The individual flowers, complete with the male and female parts, are borne in a panicle .with the pollen shedding as soon as the flowers opened Stigmatic receptivity lasted for 2-3 days and the species is insect pollinated. In general, the chromosomal behavior is normal. different configurations however, were observed at telophase II due to the variable positioning of the metaphase plates. Chromosomes were observed to be sticky at all stages and the poor spreading and extreme smallness of the chromosomes contributed to the difficulty in establishing the chromosome number. Pollen fertility test using 12KI stain showed that the pollen in A. lanceolata are fertile, and therefore, functional.
