Abstract

The role of phosphorus (P) in rice (Ory:a saliva L.) response to salinity stress was determined in the study. One salt-tolerant (V40) and one salt-sensitive (IR29) rice cultivars were grown hydroponically in nutrient solution for 23 days with varying P levels (3, 10, and 15 ppm) and with 0 dS ml and 10 dS rn-I as salinity treatments. In both cultivars, increasing the P level leads to better growth of the plants as evidenced by the decrease in shoot visual scores under non-saline condition. Under saline condition, however, V40 exhibited less salinity stress symptoms at high P level. It also exhibited increase in root dry matter with increasing P level in the medium under non-saline condition. Maximum root length, however, was observed at low P level showing adaptation of this cultivar to the limited I' content in the medium. V40 showed tolerance to salinity as evidenced by the increase in green leaf area with increasing P level as well as less membrane damage and Na accumulation. On the other hand, IR29 exhibited increase in root length with increasing P level under non-saline condition. Maximum root biomass in terms of dry weight, however, was measured at intermediate P level. At high P level, reduction in membrane damage as well as Na uptake was observed under salt stress condition. Addition of P in the medium may ameliorate the effects of salt stress to the susceptible line. Thus, these results suggest that the use of tolerant crops be considered as a management strategy in salt affected soils, as well as the application of high P as a possible nutrient management strategy to improve growth under salt stress condition.
