Abstract

Sixty sexually mature mice (Mus musculus) were used to determine the influence of neem plant, Azadirachta indica, leaf extract on their reproduction performance. Body weights, estrous cycle, morphological and histological analyses were conducted. Four treatment levels (0%, 5%, 10%, and 20%) of neem leaf extract were administered daily over a period of five days using the gavage method. The seem treatment did not show any significant effect on the mean body weight of the experimental animals. Estrous cycle and its various phases were not also significantly affected. Liver, spleen, kidney, testis and ovary weights were likewise not significantly affected although a slight effect was noted in the ovary and the kidney of the male mice. Histopathological evaluation of testes and ovaries showed no pronounced histological changes. However, an appreciable haemorrhagic congestion and degeneration of young follicles of the ovary was observed in the 20% treated group. The study failed to discover any significant effect of neem on the reproduction and histophysiological responses of mice.
