Abstract

Electrophoretic banding patterns for transferrin, acid phosphatase, albumin, esterase and alkaline phosphatase of Philippine horses (Equus caballus L.) at four age groups (2-3, 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 years old) were analyzed and compared by using starch gel electrophoresis. Four plasma samples from female horses were used per age group. All the proteins were monomorphic at all ages except for transferrin and acid phosphatase which were polymorphic only at age group 10-11 years old. Three alleles TrfA, TrfB and Trtc and two banding patterns TrfAC and TrBC were resolved and identified for the transferrin locus. TrfAC was present in all ages while TrfBC was only found in age group 10-11. Acid phosphatase had two alleles AcphA and AcphB and two banding patterns were observed. AcphBB was present in all of the age groups while AcphAB was only present in age group 10-11 years old. Only one band AlbA and one banding patterns AlbAA was identified for albumin. Eaterase appeared to be controlled by three presumptive loci, Est1, Est2 and Est3. Est3 had two alleles Est3A and Est3B. the banding patterns Est1AA, Est3AB were present in all ages. Alkaline phosphatase had twoalleles AlphA and AlphB and one banding pattern AlphAB was identified in all ages.

The Genetic Similarity values obtained based on the Jaccard Similarity Index showed that horses in the ages 2-3, 8-9 and 12-13 years old were 100% similar with each other but only 71.4% similar with the horses in the 10-11 age group.
