Abstract

The study was conducted to determine if increasing supplementation of Moringa oleifera Lam leaf meal (MoLM) with Cd can have an effect on hepatosomatic index and growth performance of Mallard ducklings fed commercial diet with known Cd content. One hundred eggs were incubated for one month and waited to hatch until 32 mallard ducklings were selected. The experiment was divided into four treatments namely (T1) control, (T2) 2.5% MoLM, (T3) 5% MoLM and (T4) 10% MoLM. The initial and final weight, average daily gain (ADG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), liver weight and hepatosomatic index were measured on the 2nd and 4th week of the experiment. Siginificant differences were found in ADG and FCR on which control treatment had the best growth performance for both parameters while the 10% level of MoLM significantly affects the growth rate of the early growing ducks in terms of ADG. Upon dissection, no visible gross abnormalities were found in the liver. Feed and liver samples were found to contain Cd residue ranging from 0.61 to 0.99 ppm and 0.14 0.85 ppm respectively. The 240 kDa putative vitellogenin was seen in all of the treatments which confirmed that the Mallard ducklings had been exposed to Cadmium, an Endocrine Disrupting Chemical.
