Abstract

As the coffee capital of the Philippines, Amadeo Cavite aims to improve the situation of the coffee industry in the country through filling various gaps between the supply chain of coffee and the increasing demand. Coffee is the principal crop being raised by the farmers, which serves as the base crop for multi cropping system. Aside from coffee, other crops grown are bananas, coconut, pineapples, papayas and other root crops. Farmers are encouraged to join cooperatives in order to improve coffee production in terms of quality and quantity. In this way they can increase their bargaining power and earn higher prices for their produce. Café Amadeo Development cooperative aims to be the country’s leading cooperative that produces and distributes quality coffee.

This study attempted to present and assess the overall performance of Café Amadeo Development Cooperative. Specifically aimed to evaluate the external and internal environment prevailing at the particular time of the study, determine the problem relevant to the business issues, assess the impact of the cooperative on farmers and community, analyze alternative business solution and finally generate recommend actions.

Primary data were gathered through personal interview of the five board of directors, fifty members and the general manager of the cooperative. Secondary data came from the documents provided by the cooperative, which included its history, profile and financial statements. Other data were derived from the Department of Agriculture, Philippine Statistics Authority, Cooperative Development Authority and other related institutions.

Results revealed that the major problem of the cooperative was the decreasing supply of coffee. This in turn, resulted in dependency of the cooperative with an outside suppliers and the variability in the supply of coffee beans. These issues together with the inefficiency of the roasting machine and equipment, can lead to uncertainties and compromise the quality of the product. This can be a barrier in supplying to bigger markets like hotel and restaurants, supermarkets and the export market. For the cooperative to achieve its vision statement of becoming the country’s leading cooperative that produces and distributes quality then it should also have a sufficient and competent workforce.

This study recommends improving the efficiency in processing coffee through safety stock inventory, production schedule as well as continuous product development to enhance the productivity and profitability of the cooperative. It is also recommend for the cooperative to reach out to larger companies that help them manage the variability in their supply. Working closely with its suppliers, local organizations and relevant private organizations can help Café Amadeo Development Cooperative build resilience in its supply chain to both current machinery inefficiency and future supply risks.
