Abstract
The rise in demand for food and other agricultural products makes it an imperative to increase the level of farm productivity while reducing costs of production and maintaining high standards for environmental sustainability. In a utopian scenario, it is easy to achieve the noble goals of agricultural production but the constraints impressed on our farming communities by different external factors and market conditions are real and concerning. The high cost of agricultural inputs especially fertilizers has been one of the major challenges faced by farmers notwithstanding environmental hazards accompanied with the long-term and excess use of chemical fertilizers. Subsequently, MykoPlus Biofertilizer, a result of microbial inoculation technology, has been proudly developed to improve both crop productivity and profitability. Furthermore, MykoPlus seeks to address the long-term soil condition of farmlands, an element often overlooked by most.
The study aims to contribute to the commercialization process of the technology by designing an optimal business model based on the most appropriate technology transfer arrangement and subsequently developing insightful strategies that will aide in the successful market entry of the technology. After conducting an in-depth comparison analysis of prospective business models under each mode of commercialization, the establishment of a spin off company was considered to be the best alternative.
Derived demand analysis using production data, recommended fertilizer usage, and fertilizer expenditure per crop was conducted to estimate the potential market size for MykoPlus. Competitor analysis using information gathered from expert validators and secondary data was used to determine the appropriate product mix and positioning of the brand. Moreover, Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) were utilized to assess the financial viability of the project.
With a special focus on the business model, marketing aspect, and financial viability of the prospective enterprise, the study primarily revolves around critical strategic decisions that will ensure the effective commercialization of the technology.
