Abstract
Philippine duck industry ranks second, next to chicken industry, in providing poultry products in the country. Demands for its product, such as “balut”, “penoy” and salted eggs, are constantly increasing for the past years. There is also an increase in the population of ducks and duck raisers. Despite the increase in demand and population in the industry, there are still problems and issues being faced by the industry.
This research was conducted in order to identify the current problems faced by commercial duck farms at Candaba, Pampanga; (1) to analyze, and assess the production and marketing operations of the duck farms; (2) assess if the performance of the duck can help them achieve sustainability; (3) and to recommend courses of action to solve the major problem of the industry.
The study covered the town of Candaba, one of the municipalities of Pampanga, which according to the Philippine Statistics Association, ranks third in egg production among the provinces of Central Luzon (PSA, 2016). It focused on 100 commercial duck layer farms from the top three producing barangays of the Candaba namely, Bahay Pare, Vizal San Pablo and Dulong Ilog. The target sample size was obtained using the convenience sampling method, which shortened the time of data collection and made use of accessible respondents for the researcher. The study focused on the production and marketing operations of the commercial duck layer farms.
The farms were classified into medium- and large-scale commercial duck layer farms based on the description given by PCAARRD (2017). Primary data was collected through interviews and questionnaires supported by secondary data gained from scholarly articles, books, journals and data given by the municipal office of the town. The data was analyzed using statistical tools such as frequency analysis and means in order to assess the production and marketing operations of the commercial duck layer farms.
The results of the research showed that commercial duck layer farms in Candaba, Pampanga were performing well in terms of duck egg production; however, there were still inconsistencies and issues that needed to be addressed to ensure the achievement of maximum operations of the farms . For the production aspect, the identified were low egg production, poor technical skills of owners, and inefficient feeding rations as well as the lacking and inefficient farm record keeping practices. For the marketing aspect, the identified constraints were the unstable price of eggs and poor information dissemination of available government assistance.
In order for commercial duck layer farms in Candaba, Pampanga to improve and sustain their business operations, particularly in the production and marketing aspects, the researcher recommended to the duck layer farm owners the following: the installation of swimming ponds for ducks during hot months; the utilization of ItikPinas, the first locally bred commercial duck breed, in egg production; the monitoring of the feed consumption of ducks through the development of proper record keeping systems for use from internet and online forums; regular attendance in seminars and trainings hosted by LGUs or cooperatives; establishment of value-adding activities such as processing reject eggs into other products.
Furthermore, it was recommended that the LGUs organize informational forums and seminars and provide brochures or pamphlets regarding different government assistance and how these can be accessed by duck layer farm owners.
