Abstract
The study entitled “Status, Problems, and Prospects of the Banana Industry in Candelaria, Quezon” was conducted to assess the status and issues of the industry and to determine the opportunities and strategic direction for the participants in the industry. Specifically, the study aims to: (1) identify and present the profile of the participants of the banana industry; (2) discuss the commodity flow of each variety among the participants; (3) determine and assess the status, problems, and investment prospects currently present in the industry, and; (4) recommend potential investment and developmental entry points in the banana industry.
The researcher used descriptive tools in assessing the activities of the participants of the industry which are farmers, farmers/traders, traders, and retailers. The total number of participants interviewed for the study was 89. Using the sample size formula, the sample size for the banana farmers, including farmers/traders was 78 spread over barangays namely San Isidro, Bukal Norte & Sur, Mangilag Norte, Masalukot II, Mayabobo, Sta. Catalina Sur, Kinatihan I & II, Masin Norte, and Malabanban Norte. Traders and retailers do not have a recorded population size, hence, the researcher used snowball method to interview five traders from Mayabobo, San Isidro, Bukal Norte and Mangilag Norte, and six retailers, all of which were located in the wet market of the municipality. Primary data were collected through personal interviews and observations during farm visits. Secondary data were gathered from publications of institutions like Department of Agriculture (DA), Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), credible publications and reliable online sources. The data analysis tools used were: Strength-Weaknesses-Opportunities- Threats (SWOT) analysis to evaluate the internal and external factors affecting the industry; Cost and Return analysis was also utilized to compute the expenses and profits of the businesses; the commodity flow of each variety was also assessed to estimate the volume of purchases made by the participants per variety; and Problem Tree analysis to determine the cause and the main problem of the industry.
The identified main problem of the industry was deteremined tobe the declining productivity of the farms due to the following: (1) climate change; (2) presence of disease on the banana plants; (3) depletion of soil nutrients; and (4) the lack of technical knowledge among the farmers. However, there were opportunities in the industry. These were the: (1) establishment of the Banana Growers’ Assocation; (2) developments in the industry like the banana industry being given priority in the province; (3) the farm-to-market roads constructed under the Philippine Rural Development Project; and (4) the increase in demand for banana in local and export market.
The recommendations formulated were the following: (1) the banana farmers were encouraged to join the existing association; (2) the farmers were also recommended to initiate, with the assistance of the local government unit, to set up of irrigation and drainage systems; and (3) the industry association should construct banana processing plants in the municipality with the aid of the local government unit or investors.
