Abstract

Pot experiment. in one crop cycle of the rice plant' IR-36, was conducted to determine the vegetative growth of the inoculated nitrogen-fixing blue-green alga (BGA). Gloeotrichia natans, on Mt. Pinatubo ash soil and to determine the effect of Mt. Pinatubo ash soil on the growth of the rice plant. Algal enumeration showed that the inoculated BGA did not dominate in any of the treatments. Instead. there were four genera of nitrogen-fixing blue-green algae that dominated. i.e. Nostoc. Aphanothece, Anabaena. and Anabaenopsis. Pure Mt. Finatubo ash soil showed the earliest growth for Nostoc and the least growth on the rice plant. Seventy five percent ash soil showed the least algal growth. A combination of 25% ash soil and 75% Maahas clay loam (T5) had the least algal enumeration for nitrogen-fixing blue-green algae.
