Abstract

Morphological and cytological characterization was done on three Saccharum hybrid from Hawaii, namely: H56-4501, H60-2315 and H68-4805. Morphological characteristics were noted, stem epidermal patterns were analyzed, chromosomes were counted during Diakinesis, and chromosome behavior at meiosis was compared. Out of the 53 characteristics considered, the three hybrids were similar in 21 morphological traits. H60-2315was the least similar (49%). All Saccharum hybrids had spreading tillering habit, open leaf carriage, and yellow green leaf blade and stalk internode. The most noticeable differences were on plant habit (erect in H56-4501, intermediate in H60-2315, reclining in H68-4805), outer auricle shape (Straight in H56-4501, sloping on H60-2315, ascending in H68-4805). and stalk waxiness (heavy in H56-4501, light in H602315, restricted to wax band in H68-4805) H56-4501 had the longest leaf blade among the three (171.5 cm ave.) followed by H68-4805 (156.2 cm ave) then the shortest was H60-2315 (152 cm ave.). The epidermal pattern of all the hybrid was Type V since there was no paired corck-silica observed. Chromosome number in H56-450 ranged from 2n=78 - 106, 2n=106 in H60-2315 and for H-68-4805 2n= 74-96. The most frequent counts were also follows: 48II (46%) in H56-4501, 45 II (18%) in H60-2315 and 43 II (28%) in H68-4805. Few chromosomal abnormalities were observed in the three Saccharum hybrids; these were triple pole formation in H68-4805 (2%) laggards in metaphase I in H68-4805 (2%), laggards in Anaphase I in H56-4501 (6%) and H68-4805 (10%) and laggards in Telophase I in H60-2315 and H68-4805 (both 2%) No chromosomal abnormalities were observed at Meiosis II in the three hybrids.
