Abstract

Six representative varieties of corn, native to the Philippines were used in this study. Their microspore-mother-cells were examined at the pachytene stage. Acetocarmine smear technique was used in the cytological analysis. The morphological features (i.e., relative length, arm ratios (long arm short arm), knobs and heteromatic regions of the 6 varieties were studied, using representative drawings of the karyotype of each variety. Considerable differences in these morphological features were observed in each of the bivalents of every variety. These differences were attributed to unequal degree of condensation of each chromosome. Lucleolar chromosomes varied among the 6 varieties and were considered to be distinct characteristics of every variety.
