Abstract

The major farm practice was conducted at F1 Ferrari Farms, Inc., Sta Cruz, Laguna from May 4 to May 28, 2011. The farm has a sow level of 246 and a total animal population of 1594. The farm practice enabled the student to gain hands on experience on the daily activities done in a swine farm, apply the theoretical knowledge learned from the university, gain and develop the necessary skills for effective management of a swine farm, and learn how to interact with people in the swine industry. The farm is divided into different sections such as breeding-gestating, farrowing, nursery, growing-finishing and feed mill. The student performed several activities such as cleaning, feeding, record keeping, vaccination, medication, heat detection, assisting during natural mating, assisting during farrowing, needle teeth cutting, ear notching, tail docking, castration, iron injection, assisting and fostering of suckling, weighing and transferring of animals. Technical analysis of the information gathered from the various sections of the farm was done. Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats were identified and analyzed. Recommendations and possible solutions in the farm were also formulated. Problems encountered and lessons learned were also identified.
