Abstract

Cooperatives are deemed to be an alternative model for local businesses. In the Philippines, cooperatives are prevalent most especially in rural areas. They are perceived to be an important instrument in the achievement of a community’s developmental objectives by being an effective tool in eliminating poverty and underdevelopment thru generation of jobs most especially in rural areas. Cooperatives create employment not only for the adult but also for the youth. They also help in promoting efficient use of resources and agriculture.

Alay Kapwa Rural Wo/men Multi-Purpose Cooperative is a cooperative engaged in the production of agricultural products such as malunggay tea, coco jam, and coconut coir. The cooperative aims to address issues related to poverty, inequality, and education as they strengthen the advocacy of the people in Sariaya.

This case research was conducted mainly to present and assess the overall performance of Alay Kapwa Rural Wo/men Multi-Purpose Cooperative. Specifically, it aimed to: 1) present and discuss a noteworthy business issue(s) encountered by Alay Kapwa Rural Wo/men Multi-Purpose Cooperative which has wide implications on the cooperative; 2) analyze the relevant elements of the business environment that greatly influence the current situation of the cooperative; 3) determine and evaluate the cooperative in terms of its marketing, production, personnel, and finance operations; 4) identify and analyze the major issues and concerns of the cooperative at the time when the study was made; 5) generate and evaluate alternative solutions to the identified problem and concerns of the cooperative; and 6) Identify the best solution and design an implementation plan for the chosen solution.

Descriptive research design was used in this study. Both primary and secondary data were used. Primary data were gathered through scheduled personal interviews with key informants such as the members and officers of the cooperative and observation. Secondary data, on the other hand, were gathered from different government institutions such as Fiber Industry Development Authority (FIDA), Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS), and Cooperative Development Authority (CDA). Undergraduate Special Problems, magazines and journals were also utilized in this study.

It was found out that the cooperative is having some problems in the procurement of their raw materials most especially for their coconut coir production. Other problems of the cooperative include lack of committed members and lack of working capital. After analysis of the cooperative’s problems, the researcher decided to formulate strategies that the cooperative can opt to implement to improve their productivity considering their limited scope of business, inadequacy of working capital, and lack of committed members.

Three alternatives were formulated namely: 1) strategic alliance with farmers in the area to have a stable supply of raw materials, 2) mass recruitment of coop potential members via intense seminar and information dissemination, and 3) strengthening of relationship between members and enhance commitment to increase productivity and be able to respond to opportunities.

The decision tool used was a preference matrix. The results showed that the most appropriate strategy is to have strategic alliance with farmers in the area to have a stable supply of raw materials. Implementation plan was made and impacts of this strategy to the four business functions were also evaluated.
