Abstract

Off-season vegetable production was introduced to help farmers adequately meet the need for year round production of safe and high quality crops. Greenhouse technology is mostly used to take care of the vegetable seedlings prior to planting in the open field. D. Duran Farm and Agribusiness Training Center (DDFATC) is one of the few that produces off-season vegetables in the Municipality of San Ildefonso, Bulacan.

The main objective of this study was to present and evaluate the current operations and management of DDFATC, the business issues it faces, and to formulate the best alternative to be implemented. The specific objectives were to (a) present and discuss the historical background and profile of DDFATC; (b) evaluate the business environment prevailing at a particular time of the case; (c) describe DDFATC in terms of the four business functions namely: marketing, finance, production and personnel; (d) define the major problem faced by DDFATC; (e) generate and evaluate alternative solutions to the identified problems; (f) identify the best solution using appropriate criteria; and (g) design an implementation plan for the chosen solution.

Data were acquired from primary and secondary sources. These data were examined using descriptive method, while financial statements were analyzed using financial ratios to explain the profitability and financial performance of the farm.

Because of the problems of DDFATC in the four different business functions, the main concern of the farm today is its inability to raise the sufficient amount of cash in order for the owner to convert her farm into a venue for agri- tourism. Alternatives were formulated in order to solve these problems, namely: (1) establish two greenhouses for tomato and eggplant; (2) establish two greenhouses for ampalaya and cucumber; and (3) establish one greenhouse for tomato and eggplant and another one for ampalaya and cucumber.

Based on the results of the assessment, Alternative 3, which is the establishment of one greenhouse for tomato and eggplant and another one for ampalaya and cucumber was chosen. This would address all the problems faced by DDFATC. In case the chosen alternative did not work out well, Alternative 2, which is the establishment of two greenhouses for ampalaya and cucumber, will serve as the next best option of the farm.
