Abstract
Pinilisa rice is one of the native products in Jones, Isabela. It is known to be upland rice which is propagated by the farmers from remote areas in the town. Its unique characteristics and distinct aroma make the consumers crave more for it. Although the production area is increasing; it is not known in the market yet.
This study was conducted in order to know the current status of the production technology and marketing practices of Pinilisa rice in Isabela. Specifically, it aimed to: (1) present an overview of Pinilisa rice production and marketing in Isabela particularly the performance of the key players; (2) describe the farming, technology, and marketing practices of the key players in Pinilisa rice production in the province; (3) determine the key success factors in Pinilisa rice production and marketing in Isabela; (4) identify the problems, weaknesses and gaps in the operations of the key players involved in the production and marketing of Pinilisa rice; (5) identify investment opportunities and/or development entry points for the potential entrants in Pinilisa rice production and marketing; and (6) formulate possible solutions to the identified problems, weaknesses and gaps.
A formal interview was conducted among 40 farmersfrom the two barangays of Jones: Villa Bello and Namnama which was identified through snowball sampling. In addition a formal interview was also done among the 10 respondents in marketing. Meanwhile, an informal interview was conducted with millers, owner of threshers, and consumers, which was identified through convenience sampling. The respondents were mostly identified through referral method. A combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis was used in analyzing the data. Data gathered was used to describe the farming, technology, and marketing practices of Pinilisa in the province.
Result showed that most of the farmers-respondent were part-time producers of Pinilisa and only few were fulltime producers of Pinilisa. Pinilisa was also considered as one of the major sources of income of the farmers. Almost half of their total income was derived from Pinilisa production and the rest were from producing other crops like corn, banana, cassava, ordinary rice, fruits, vegetables and Palawan, another upland rice variety. Moreover, in terms of area of production, Villa Bello had the larger area of land planted to Pinilisa than Namnama. Meanwhile, traders had an average total monthly income of P92,000 or P1,104,000 annually. Only a small portion of this income was from selling Pinilisa. Majority of them were engage in selling agrivet products, rice products, and grocery market.
Furthermore, the results showed that most of the farmers owned their capital. In terms of method of planting, the key informants used kaingin and/or secano method of planting. They also used multi-cropping, inter-cropping and switch cropping in the production. They also used three inputs in production, namely seeds, fertilizers and pesticides. The operation of Pinilisa includes land preparation, planting, maintenance, harvesting, drying, threshing, milling, and selling to traders. Moreover, harvest was only allocated for seed, selling and consumption. In terms of marketing practices, traders sourced Pinilisa from barangays Villa Bello, Namnama, San Isidro, Dicamay and Linumot. The mode of payment to suppliers was full payment upon delivery. The availability of the product was during the months of September to January. It was sold in the public market of Jones at a price range from P60 to P70 per kilo and was promoted through a fiesta celebration.
The uniqueness and rarity of Pinilisa serves as its competitive edge among other rice varieties. Moreover, the key success factors in production include skill of farmers, being innovative and knowledgeable in managing the different factors that affect the yield such as input, water, nutrients, pests and other management. In addition, farmer’s experience could boost Pinilisa production.
The results also showed that the problems in production include low productivity, which results to a decreasing supply of Pinilisa caused by natural phenomenon like typhoon, pests and the management of the farmers. Another problem was the lack of farming skills and knowledge especially in organic farming since it is promoted as organic rice. The right timing of planting and harvesting is also important. Another problem was the high transaction cost in transporting the product to the market. The only problem in marketing was the lack of Pinilisa rice supply. The results also revealed that there are investment opportunities in marketing of Pinilisa rice especially in processing.
It is recommended that farmers should continue to produce Pinilisa, as well as to expand their production area. Since there is an increasing demand for the product, moreover it is also recommended for them to attend seminars to acquire knowledge on different management practices in the production as well as about organic. In marketing, it is recommended to diversify the product offer or processing of Pinilisa and to participate with the LGU to intensify promotion of Pinilisa. It is also recommended to the potential entrants since there is profit in producing it. Moreover, in terms of management, they should consider the opinion of a long-time farmer of Pinilisa. Furthermore, the national and local government should conduct seminars regarding organic farming and/or different effective management practices in Pinilisa. They must be the ones to encourage farmers to increase the production area of Pinilisa as well as prospective Pinilisa farmers by providing information regarding production of Pinilisa. Lastly to have an effective and efficient communication, they must be the ones to initiate cooperative for Pinilisa farmers.
