Abstract

This technopreneurial study was conducted to determine the willingness of the target consumers in using dalandan puree as a substitute to the widely popular carbonated and flavored drinks in the market as a business start-up. The main objectives of this study are to describe the processes in setting up and starting a dalandan puree business, to present the start-up problems and issues encountered in starting a dalandan puree business, to assess the initial performance of the start-up,reflect on the knowledge, skills, values, work ethics, and insights gained/developed from the start-up experience; and to come up with courses of actions for the implementation of the business plan, the enterprise, and the AFNR Program, and to identify investment and development entry points for potential stakeholders in dalandan puree enterprises.

The business plan incorporated in this technopreneurship study is composed of different technopreneurial activities that engaged in the manufacture and marketing of dalandan fruit puree to the consumer market. This was part of the UPLB-AFNR short course program funded by PCARRD-DOST and facilitated by the Department of Agribusiness Management and Institute of Food Science and Technology that aimed to promote technopreneurship among UPLB constituents. Specifically, it intended that AFNR students are equipped with necessary knowledge and skills gained from their undergraduate courses.

This study focuses in the town of Los Baños for their accessibility and proximity to the productions pilot plant and near to the place where the technopreneur is currently residing. The target market are those household members including the mother’s, school children, the sick and aged people who needs nutrients and vitamin C in their bodies. The technopreneurship product is dalandan puree; a pure dalandan fruit extract made from real fruit with no additives and preservatives added. The product was registered under the DTI and named Quencher Dalandan Puree.

This project was supported and funded by the Department of Science and Technology by the Philippine Council for Advanced Science and Technology Research and Development (PCASTRD).The technical assistance of this project was handled by the Institute of Food Science and Technology while the knowledge and skills regarding business was facilitated by the Department of Agribusiness Management.

The product was marketed through personal selling to promote the importance of vitamin C for the body and its numerous health benefits. The product was priced based on cost plus pricing to make a constant price of the product offered to its customers.

During the production and marketing of the product, problems were encountered and identified in the three important aspects of the business namely, marketing, production and finance. In marketing, some problems encountered and observed are the lack of product awareness of the target customers and the lack of advertisement for the product that made it unpopular to many customers. When it comes to production, several major problems were encountered regarding the pilot plant itself, the quality of the product, machine inefficiency, volume of inventory and the lack of machineries and equipment that can be used for the production itself. Financing the business was the major problem encountered when it comes to finance, self-financing needs to be done due to the unavailability of funds on the right time of production.

Forestalling the future of the business, the technopreneur envisioned a bigger market and bigger production volumes that will cater different distributors and end consumers. Technology improvement as well as the acquisition of own plantation and machineries was envisioned to happen after the current business established a better position in the market which will happen when an ROI of 40% or higher is obtained. Manufacturing plant that will be placed in Bulacan where the technopreneur’s family is located, hiring permanent workers and producing different varieties of fruits and forward integration to different fruit juices mixes were expected to happen.

Before the said plan to happen, the technopreneur needs to have enough capital to establish her own plantation and equipment which will come from the Land Bank of the Philippines under its “Sulong Program”. A 12% loan interest payable in three years will be acquired and with that, after 5 years of bigger corporation, the company will gain a net present value of Php2,952,209.61 and an Internal Rate of Return of 73% with the initial investment recovery of 1.33 years.
