Abstract

The Special Problem report entitled Technopreneurship Study of Dalandan Juice in Los Baños, Laguna aimed to document a technopreneurial start-up experience and reflect on the insights gained from such experience. Specifically, it aimed to present a business plan for a technology-based enterprise; describe the processes in setting up and starting a technology-based business; present the start-up problems and issues encountered in starting a techno-venture; assess the initial performance of the start-up; reflect on the knowledge, skills, values, work ethics, and insights gained/developed from the start-up experience; and come up with courses of actions for the implementation of the business plan, the enterprise, and the AFNR Program, Identify investment and development entry points for potential stakeholders in technology-based enterprises.

Technopreneurship is a synergized term formed from the words “technology” and “entrepreneur”, defined by Feliciano (2009) as a process of engaging into high technology areas involving the production of new products or services. The Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources (AFNR) Short Course Technology-based entrepreneurship held last April-May 2010 for three weeks sought to promote technopreneurship. The program exposed the participants to processing of food products like fruit/vegetables juices, cheese and microbial rennet by way of Technological Learning Project (TLPs). The TLPs embodied the technology and their product output that were derived commercialize-able.

The product is packed in a 350ml PET bottle with their labels. It is available at Php 16.00 each and a 10% discount will be given for those customers who will be buying in bulk. The whole sale price is Php 14.40 each. The target markets are the students and staff members of UPLB and other households of Los Baños, Laguna. An intensive promotion strategy will be pursued since the product is new in the market. The products undergo toll processing at the Institute of Science and Technology (IFST), UPLB. The full capacity of the processing plant is 1000 bottles per day and it is every Mondays and Wednesdays only.

The major problems that the technopreneur encountered are the following: (1) delays of fund resulted to constraint of procurement of raw materials, (2) limited capacity of toll processor, and (3) bottles were deformed.

In venturing in a techno-based business, the concepts and theories that were gained from your courses should be put into actions. Business and technical knowledge should work together. Proper management in the operation, Finance, Marketing and Personnel should always be considered.

In the future plans, the business will soon be registered as sole proprietorship and a total of Php 1,468,210.00 will be needed for the investment requirements in having a processing plant and equipment. Aside from that the technopreneur, will do market expansion and concentric diversification for the business. If they still want to improve this report they could conduct further study with regards to this.
