Abstract

Vitamin C has been under the spotlight with speculations of its potential role in the management of COVID-19. Studies and articles have been released reporting different positive effects of the said vitamin, however no study has yet confirmed its role as well as the strength of evidence present in this issue. With that, the researcher aimed to construct a summary of clinical trials that involved the administration of high doses of vitamin C among COVID-19 positive patients and determine whether an effect exists. At the same time, this aimed to evaluate the strength of evidence present. A total of three (3) studies were subjected to meta-analysis. These studies were manually looked up in different databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, MBPI and clinicaltrials.gov) and were screened based on a set of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Statistical analysis consisted of an effect size measurement and three (3) tests for heterogeneity (Cochran’s Q, Higgin’s & Thompson’s and Prediction Interval). The length of ICU stay was pooled for analysis. All tests yielded high heterogeneity across all studies (Cochran’s Q: p-value < 0.001, 0.05 level of significance; 2= 97.9%; Prediction Interval = [-24.9403, 24.8311]. To account for this result, the random effects model was used (p-value 0.9559, -0.0546 SD). Amidst several studies reporting otherwise, it still cannot be concluded that vitamin C intake of COVID-19 patients will have a significant effect in their ICU stay. There is a need for more extensive trials done in order to further prove vitamin C’s role in COVID-19 treatment.
