Abstract

This study assessed the effects of engaging in e-commerce for the footwear industry in Liliw, Laguna. In particular, it presented the adoption mechanisms of the adopters, the reasons behind the non-adoption of some respondents, the effects of electronic commerce on the production and sales of the adopters and recommended strategies that would improve the adoption of e-commerce. Both primary and secondary data were utilized. Primary data were obtained through survey questionnaires and observation of 39 respondents in Liliw. Some customers were also asked during the interview. Data were then analyzed using descriptive analysis. The study was divided in three parts: the e-commerce adopters, the non-adopters, and the case study of the most successful adopter. The study revealed that there were five e-commerce adopters and 34 non-adopters among the 39 respondents. The study also showed that there was 36 percent unawareness about e-commerce among the non- adopters. Among the five adopters only one was considered the most successful which was utilized to further strengthen the discussion on the beneficial effects of adopting e- commerce. Also the study established that e-commerce was only one percent (1%) of the total operational costs of the footwear, yet it helped increase the market reach and volume of operation of the adopter in a considerable manner. The use of e-commerce also improved the opportunity-seeking, risk-taking and networking capabilities of the adopters. Recommendations forwarded were: improve DTI and LGU support on the improvement of e-commerce as an innovation; the improvement of the implementation of the E-commerce Act of 2000; and the formulation of new acts and house bills to support and protect e-commerce in Liliw, Laguna, and the Philippines, as a whole.
