Abstract

This study was done to obtain more information on the vitamin C levels of selected Filipinos of different age groups and to determine the factors which may influence the concentration of this vitamin in their blood. Twenty-four female and 3 male subjects with ages ranging from 15 to 58 years volunteered for the study. Questionnaires were completed by the subjects which gave information regarding their age, sex, occupation, educational attainment, diet, income, occurrence of menstruation, smoking habit, and alcohol intake. The five variables which strongly influenced the vitamin C concentration in the blood were age, diet, occupation, income, and educational attainment. Frequent intake of fresh fruits, vegetables, and juice (fresh and processed) gave higher values. Older people tend to have higher vitamin C in the blood. The same is true in the subjects with higher income and a higher level of education. The regularity or irregularity of the menstrual cycle did not show any effect on the blood vitamin C of women. No significant difference was observed in smokers and nonsmokers. For those who drank alcoholic drinks, their blood vitamin C concentrations were significantly lower than who did not.
