Abstract

The study aimed to determine the effects of AhonsaHirap Inc. on income and socio-economic status of women borrowers in Calamba City. Specifically, the study aimed to: 1) describe how ASHI loans were utilized by the borrowers; 2) to determine the effects of the ASHI loans on real net income and living condition of the ASHI borrowers; 3) to identify the reasons why members choose to continue or discontinue their membership to the program; and 4) to recommend measures to improve the implementation of the program. Descriptive analysis, t-test for paired samples, analysis of variance and Likert Scale were employed in the study to address the preceding objectives. The study found out that not all sample borrowers were able to use their loans for the intended purpose. Some of them misused the loans. About seven for every ten borrower respondents used their loans for intended purposes. It was also found out that there was a significant difference between the average real net income of the borrowers who used their loans for the intended purpose and those who misused their loans after ASHI loan availment. There was a significant increase on the borrower’s income after being members of the program. Majority of the respondents used the income generated from the projects financed by ASHI loans to buy household appliances. The ASHI program in a way has empowered the women participants. Almost four for every ten respondents became active on community concerns and baranggay activities. A number was able to develop their self-esteem and became more conscious of respecting the business of others. Overall, the participation of women in ASHI program showed positive outcome because women were able to recognize what has improved in their status as an individual. Client-friendly policies such as low interest, easy mode of payment without collateral, presence of insurance and other benefits, nice and friendly staff members, accessibility, new friends and camaraderie were the reasons for continuing membership to the program. On the other hand, reasons for discontinuing from the program included poor business performance, personal circumstances such as becoming pregnant or ill, had to look after another family member, and migration. Some had conflict with ASHI staff members while others did not like the policies implemented by the program. The study recommendsimprovement in the monitoring scheme of the program, revision of lending policy on selection of member-borrowers, replication, and promotion in other depressed areas of the successful features of the program.
