Abstract

Concentration of cytokinin present in coconut water (CW) of mature at different storage periods were determined. Addition of toluene to CW effected the extraction of such growth hormones as gebberelins, auxins, etc. leaving the cytokinin in the glucoside and riboside forms in the aqueous layer. These were subjected to thin layer chromatography (TLC). Solvent systems used mere 12:3:5 ratio of n-butanol : acetic acid: water and 10:1:1 of isopropanol: ammonia:water. the resulting spots gave Rf values comparable to the values found in the literature. Cytokinin content of CW was determined using the cucumber cotyledon expansion bioassay. Results showed that cotyledon area increased as the storage period of coconut was increased from the first day to the second month, after which the values declined when the shoot started to develop
