Abstract

ABSTRACT

MERCADO, Bernarda Y. 1983. Further :studies on the Alkali Pretreatment of Rice Straw for Biomethanation. An under-graduate thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, under Dr. William G. Padolina, University of the Philippines at Los Banos. First Semester, 1983-1984.

The alkali pretreatment of rice straw followed by acid neutralization was studied using 0.25M and 0.75M sodium hydroxide and ammonium hydroxide solutions with 6, 12 and 18 hours soaking time. Significant differences among the treatments were found. Of all the treatments, a general increase in gas yield relative to control, together with shorter retention time, better gas quality, and greater reduction in the volatile solid contents was observed with 0.25M sodium hydroxide treatments involving the variation of soaking time.
