Abstract

Moe, Carlito P. University of the Philippines at Los Banos, March, 1980. Uptake of Cadmium by Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). Adviser: Or. Carlito R. Barril The uptake of cadmium by water hyacinth (E. crassipes) was studied as a function of time and concentration under static conditions. The plant exposed at 1.00 ppm and 5.0 ppm cadmium solution was found to remove cadmium with the increased time of exposure. The rate of removal of cadmium decreased with the length of time. It was found out that water hyacinth was capable of removing certain amount of cadmium at the extent of 0.275 mgs. per gram dry weight and 2.011 mgs. per gram dry weight from 1.0 and 5.0 ppm cadmium solution and at the rate of daily removal of 0.275 mgs. per gram per day for the first day to 0.044 mgs, per gram per day at the fourth day for 1.0 ppm solution. For 5.0 ppm solution the rate of daily removal was 2.011 mgs. per gram/day for the first day to 0.641 mgs. per gram per day at the third day.
