ABSTRACT

MONTEALEGRE, MICHAEL V. College of Agriculture, and College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Los Banos, March 2001. A Survey on Surfactant Levels and Some Water Quality Parameters of Water Sources in Selected Sites in Los Banos and Calamba, Laguna.

Adviser: Dr. Nieva T. Librojo-Basilio

The surfactant levels and some water quality parameters such as total dissolved solids, water hardness, pH, temperature, nitrate as nitrogen, and total coliform of water sources in Los Banos and Calamba, Laguna were surveyed for the months of September, November, and December 2000. The allowable limit for surfactant levels in surface water that is 0.5 mg was not exceeded. However for purposes of drinking, surfactant limit of 0.2 mg L.' was exceeded a number of times both on surface and ground water sources. Surfactant levels of the twelve water samples ranged from 0.021 to 0.386 mg L"'. The nitrate as nitrogen values obtained fell within the limit of 10 mg L.', which ranged from 0.06 to 6.03 NO3*-N L.'. The allowable pH range of 6.5 to 8.5 was followed as well. Total dissolved solids were also within the limit of 1000 mg 1.;', which ranged from 88.3 to 489 mg L.'. Samples were generally considered soft waters as described by the definition of total water hardness, which ranged from 5.06 to 60.09 mg L'i. Temperature of the twelve water samples ranged from 25.6°C to 32.0°C. The coliform :counts of the water samples were positively identified for presence of bacteria except for waters in sites 4 and 7.
