Abstract
ABSTRACT
NACARIO, RUEL COSTES. University of the Philippines Los Banos, March 1992. Isolation and preliminary structure identification of a compound from the biologically active methanol extract of Cordia myxa Linn. (Boraginaceae).
Adviser: Dr. William G. Padolina.
The methanol extract of the dried leaves of Cordia myxa Linn. (Boraginaceae) was observed to markedly inhibit the secretion of histamine by rat mast cells at 20 μg/mL based on an HPLC-fluorometric assay. Increased inhibition was noted in the ethyl acetate fraction obtained from the crude methanol extract after further extraction. Flash column and preparative thin layer chromatography yielded an opaque, needle-like crystalline compound (Compound 1) with an uncorrected melting point of 150-154°C (with decomposition). Limited spectral data (UV, FT-IR, FT-NMR, and SC-MS) and biogenetic considerations based on other Cordia spp. support a quinol-type structural assignment for Compound 1.
