An ammonia-selective modified pH probe was fabricated by fitting an inert, microporous polytetralluoroethylene (PTFE) to a glass pH electrode using silver chloride saturated ammonium chloride solution as internal electrolyte. The probe was coupled with a silver-silver chloride reference electrode. The response of the probe is based on the diffusion of ammonia across the gas permeable membrane. The fabricated ammonia probe exhibited a Nernstian response at concentrations ranging from 10' to 10-4 mole / Liter with a slope of-60 mV. Response of the probe was observed to be faster at higher ammonia concentrations. The probe was tested in the determination of ammonia in various aquatic systems. Results obtained using the direct electrode method agree closely with those obtained by a standard colorimetric method for ammonia determinations. The electrode method of analysis is simple, rapid, precise and inexpensive.
