Abstract

The moisture content of samples of molasses was deter-mined by the A.O.A.C., Hawaiian, and "Filter Paper" methods. Three types of qualitative filter paper were used in the "Filter Paper" method. The "Filter Paper" method was found to require no definite drying period in order to Give comparable results with the official A.O.A.C. and Hawaiian methods for the determination of moisture in molasses. Although the "Filter Paper" method excell9d the A.O.A.C.,nd Hawaiian methods in that .t required shorter drying time and was less tedious, it did not give very concordant results. Per cent dry substance of molasses determined by the "Filter Paper" method decreased with further nesting, probably due to partial decomposition. According to the results obtained, the "Filter Paper" method should be studied better before it could be definitely recommended for use in routine work.
