A study on the use of pectic enzymes for the extraction of essential oils from fresh Lagundi (Vitex agnus castus) leaves was conducted. The optimized conditions obtained for maximum oil yield from fresh lagundi leaves were as follows: enzyme concentration = 3.00 (w/v)%, incubation time = 24, sample:buffer dilution ratio = 1:4 (w/v). Enzymatic extraction of oil from fresh Lagundi leaves using the optimized conditions was compared with hydro steam distillation. Data showed that pectinase treatment resulted in 1.99% lagundi oil yield as compared to steam distillation which was 0.047% representing a 39.8 fold increase using the former method. Gas chromatographic analyses of the fatty acids of lagundi oil showed the presence of C16, palmitic acid.
